The dark side of Solar Panels

OPINIÓN: Contrary to what is normally believed, the manufacture of photovoltaic cells is not energy efficient, but rather expensive.

At this point where ecology is more than a fashion, a necessity, and where most architects are aware of its importance and try to implement it as much as possible, we have surely turned to solar energy as the main ally of sustainability. We are interested in supplying buildings with clean energy and we are sure that we are doing the right thing, because as far as we know, photovoltaic panels "promote savings in the consumption of energy resources and raw materials, trying to ensure that such consumption is renewable. or regenerable ". Unfortunately, the technology currently used in solar panels is not perfect. Recent studies ensure that the manufacturing process of photovoltaic cells is not energy efficient, but on the contrary, its production is quite expensive, both economically and in terms of resources. To disprove all these "myths", the United States Department of Energy (US Energy Department), assures that effectively, energy is needed to save energy, but that there is a amortization at the end of a maximum of 4 years, where it begins to register real energy savings. The term 'energy payback time' (EPBT) refers to the above, and studies the variation in the numbers depending on the panel mechanism by means of the following formula: EPBT = captive energy (kwh) / annual energy generation (kwh / anus). So in summary, they tell us that producing electricity with photovoltaics is viable, since the energy invested for its manufacture is recovered in a relatively short period of time. Regardless of the above, the materials used to manufacture each panel are far from ecological. They have chemical components "such as arsenic and cadmium, in a process that generates toxins such as sulfur hexafluoride and silicon tetrachloride; dangerous for the environment, humans and animals." Additionally, when the useful life of the system is over, it is common that it is simply discarded and takes more than 25 years to decompose, and in the process, causes serious environmental damage due to the toxicity of the materials. Some companies worry about collecting the unusable panels, but there is little that can be reused and few are the companies that even bother to carry out these practices. Undoubtedly the use of solar panels represents an alternative to common sources of energy (fossil fuels and nuclear), but it is important to be well informed before making any decision and to constantly search for options. Likewise, the use of technology should be used sparingly and with knowledge of all the implications.
