                           -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many different health problems that can cause tremors in a dog's body. Many of these are physical, often the result of an emotional problem or simply age. Some are congenital, which means they have a genetic predisposition to certain symptoms. One cause that we dog owners often overlook is a neurological reason for changes in mobility. This is because the brain gives incorrect instructions to the rest of the body. Even knowing these general causes, it can be difficult to know why a dog is shaking or trembling, something we can see with shaker syndrome. In this new article, we tell you everything we know about shaker syndrome in dogs, a condition scientifically known as idiopathic cerebellitis. Since knowing its cause is very difficult, we will focus mainly on its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. We started!

What is Shaker syndrome in dogs?

Shaker syndrome in dogs is also known as generalized tremor syndrome (GTS) or idiopathic cerebellitis. The disease causes inflammation of the cerebellum, specifically, a part of the brain that controls aspects of the nervous system in dogs. More specifically, it is responsible for the coordination of voluntary movements and muscle contractions. Many of us, as caregivers of our dogs, may wonder what causes shaker syndrome in dogs. It is an idiopathic disease, its cause being unknown. This does not mean that there is no underlying cause of shaker syndrome, it means that we do not know what it is yet. However, even if the etiology of idiopathic cerebellitis cannot be clearly established, we know that it is a type of central nervous system disorder. Shaker syndrome can affect both sexes of dogs equally, but it is more common in young or middle-aged dogs. We also know that small dogs and those with white fur are the most affected. For this reason, it is possible that a genetic factor exists, but we are not yet sure what it could be.

Symptoms of Shaker syndrome in dogs

The reason for the common name of idiopathic cerebellitis is because its main symptom is the trembling of the dog's body. This tremor appears as a slight and generalized tremor throughout the dog's body. Unfortunately, there are still many veterinary challenges to overcome in diagnosing a dog with this symptom, as it is not pathognomonic. This means that it is not an exclusive symptom of this particular disease. There are other syndromes, disorders, and diseases that can make a dog's entire body shake. One particular aspect of Shaker syndrome that can help distinguish it from other diseases is the fact that generalized tremor does not stop easily and occurs on a daily basis. It is important to differentiate between a generalized shaking and other reasons why a dog is shaking. Dogs may shake their body involuntarily due to a medical problem, but they can also do it on purpose.

Diagnosis of Shaker syndrome

If you think your dog may be suffering from this syndrome, you should go to the vet as soon as possible to verify the diagnosis. However, since the symptoms are very similar to other conditions that cause the dog to tremble or change his gait, the diagnosis is not easy. Diagnosing Shaker syndrome in dogs requires a number of tests to be comprehensive, including: Complete medical history. Current symptoms. Initial symptoms and their development over time. Blood test. Urine analysis. Electrolyte level analysis. CSF sample (Cerebrospinal fluid collection). Based on this thorough examination, the veterinarian must make a differential diagnosis and rule out other causes that may explain the symptoms. These can include physical problems such as hypothermia in dogs, or perhaps a psychological and emotional cause, such as anxiety. In either case, the vet will need to observe the context of the tremors.

Treatment of shaker syndrome in dogs

Sometimes shaker syndrome in dogs can be a serious health problem for the animal. In these cases a period of hospitalization may be necessary until the dog stabilizes various vital signs that could be affected. On the other hand, drug treatment involves cortisones. These are powerful anti-inflammatories that reduce the state of inflammation of brain tissues. It is worth mentioning that corticosteroids act by inhibiting the immune system, which results in multiple side effects. After starting treatment, the dog can recover in about a week, but it can also develop a chronic disease state. Remember that the vet is the only person trained to indicate a specific treatment if your dog suffers from shaker syndrome. They can also tell you how often to have post-treatment checkups and how to progressively reduce cortisone administration.

Shaker syndrome in white dogs

Although shaker syndrome can affect many dogs, it is true that small and white dogs are the most affected. For this reason, if we adopt a breed of small white dog or a cross with said breed, we must be particularly attentive to the tremors in its body. In this regard, the breeds most affected by white dog shake syndrome include: Poodle. West Highland White Terrier. Maltese Bichon. Bichon Frize. Havanese. Bichon Bolognese. Regardless, we should carry out regular reviews with our trusted veterinarian, but especially, it will be interesting to pay special attention to the previous breeds. Do you think your dog may be suffering from shaker syndrome? Visit the Veterinarian and your dog will be in the best hands to find the best treatment and improve his health and quality of life.

▷ Convulsion en mi perro ¿Qué hago? Posibles Causas, Soluciones.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the most frightening and even traumatizing experiences is observing a person suffering an epileptic seizure. In the movies they already make it quite shocking but when it comes to real life, it is much more traumatic. Well, in case you don't know, our pets can also suffer this type of attack and clients who have seen it come to the clinic with one of the worst scares they could have. Seizures in companion animals are a relatively frequent reason for consultation, so I want to show you with today's article the importance and severity of this process; together with the importance of a good control of it to avoid compromising the life of your animal. I will begin by explaining the difference between seizures and epilepsy, since although they are normally used together, they are not the same.

What are seizures?

A seizure is the clinical manifestation of a problem in brain activity. Neurons are the cells in charge of transmitting information in the brain through nerve impulses. Although it is not fully known how it occurs, it is known that it begins after a continuous excitation stimulus is produced in neurons. Almost 3% of the dogs seen in the clinic suffer from seizures, and within this group, in 80% of cases, the definitive diagnosis is idiopathic epilepsy (which has no clear cause). In the rest of the patients, seizures are usually secondary to other systemic diseases (being a symptom, not a disease). In cats, this type of problem is rare.

 What is idiopathic epilepsy?

Idiopathic epilepsy is a brain function disorder characterized by the presence of seizures that appear during the life of the animal, not being related to another secondary disease. These patients therefore have no other symptoms and lead a completely normal life between seizures. There are breeds that are predisposed to having idiopathic epilepsy, such as: German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Saint Bernard, Cocker, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Irish Setter, Poodle or Collie Shepherd. In the case of being an epileptic dog, the first symptoms usually appear between 6 months and 5 years of age (their appearance more frequent between 1 to 3 years).

How can you identify it?

Although in each animal it can manifest in a different way, there is an easy pattern to distinguish. In most cases, the animal suffers an alteration of consciousness, remains rigid on the ground on one side of its body and has pedaling movements with the extremities, chewing movements with the jaw and there may also be excess salivation . It is also common for them to defecate or urinate uncontrollably. Not always all the signs appear together or in the same order, as I said at the beginning, it will depend on the case. Sometimes the seizure can be partial and only affect one side of the head or one limb, being conscious at all times. Therefore, if you think that your dog may have an epileptic seizure, you can record a video to be able to show it to us, since it is very useful for its diagnosis.

Three phases of seizures

All seizures have three distinct phases: preictial phase, ichthy phase, and postictal phase. Although it seems that you are not interested in knowing their phases and they have very strange names, it is important that you know them, since knowing how to identify a preictial phase could anticipate a seizure in your dog and know what to do in case of detecting it. Preictial phase or aura: it is the phase prior to an attack. In this phase, it is common to observe changes in their behavior such as wanting to attract the attention of the owner, being restless, or otherwise wanting to be alone and begin to hide. Ictal phase: it is the convulsive phase as such. Postictal phase: when the seizure is over. In this phase it is normal to observe exhausted animals, although in some cases they show hyperactivity. Many of them begin to look for water and food, but it is important to remove it since after the crisis they may show problems swallowing food or problems in their breathing that can worsen with the intake of food or water.

 What are the causes?

The causes for seizures are diverse: thrombi, encephalitis or meningitis, trauma, congenital malformations, liver disease, hypoglycemia, thyroid disease, poisonings, tumors, etc. I'm not going to give you all the possible causes of the disease as we could be talking about it for hours. It is important that you know that there are many possible causes, that is why there are so many tests to be done to be able to reach the cause of the seizures, if any. If a possible systemic disease is ruled out, it is established that the dog has idiopathic epilepsy, that is, it is epileptic without any probable cause that produces it. The tests normally required are blood and urine tests, diagnostic imaging tests (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI), analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, etc. It may be that we only need to perform some of them to obtain a diagnosis, but in the vast majority of cases we need to perform practically all of them to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Treatments

Treatment varies depending on the cause. In those caused by another disease, treatment is aimed at controlling the disease that is causing the seizure. In the case of idiopathic epilepsy, treatment varies depending on the interval between seizures and their intensity. If treatment is instituted in the early stages of the disease, approximately 80% of cases are satisfactorily controlled in a very short time. As a recommendation, if you have an epileptic female, it is best to castrate her, since the stress of heat can increase epileptic seizures. It is important to know that treatment controls and avoids seizures to some extent, but it does not always succeed in eliminating them completely. Therefore, these animals will require lifelong treatment and control of it by you as owners together with that of the veterinarians, of course. For any seizure or epilepsy problem, a product that contains all the nutrients necessary for optimal brain function can be used. It does not have any side effects and the only thing it will do is help the brain function. It is not a substitute for other treatments but it can make possible brain degeneration or brain aging somewhat slower. It exists for small and medium or large breeds. You should also know that some of the treatments for idiopathic epilepsy can have toxic effects on the liver, so the benefits and the disadvantages must always be balanced. For chronic treatments, I recommend that my clients use a liver protector like the one listed in the link, thus minimizing the long-term damage caused by the drug.

What should you do in a seizure?

In the first place, there is no need to be alarmed and any object that could hit it must be removed from around the animal. It is very important that you take care with your hands since unconsciously, it could become aggressive and bite. If it has already been diagnosed, proceed to administer the medication prescribed by the veterinarian and place the animal in a ventilated place without stimuli (light off, no noise). If after several minutes the seizure does not finish, or it repeats, go to the vet. Never try to stop the seizure by trying to grab the animal or administer medication because the neighbor has done well, as it could be dangerous and even end in a fatal end. After the seizure, do not give food or water, leave him alone for as long as necessary until he is fully recovered.

dog perro mayor dificultad caminar Dudu cachorros y tecnologia shurkonrad

------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several factors why a dog may have trouble walking. When assessing a pathology, we must take into account, among other things, the age of the animal, since on some occasions, as in elderly dogs, the main reason may be its own age. But what other causes can there be?

Causes of walking problems

Depending on the rhythm of life our dog leads, it is possible that he may experience localized pain for a few days. Just like people, too much exercise can cause tiredness and weakness. This will cause us to have trouble walking.

However, when the pains last over time and the duration exceeds a couple of days, we should go to the vet. There they will make an assessment and proceed with the diagnosis. Some of the most common causes of walking problems are as follows.

Injuries

In addition to an invisible fracture or tear in the tendons, problems with walking can also be caused by an injury to the back or spinal cord. This usually appears due to trauma, a stroke or damage to the discs.

When a dog's spinal cord or spine is inflamed or injured, the hind legs may show signs of weakness or instability. This will inevitably cause problems walking. If our dog has not suffered an accident but is in this situation, we must go to the vet as soon as possible.

 Degenerative myelopathy

This disease is another reason why a dog may have trouble walking. Especially in adult dogs, the fibers that send the signals to the brain for the mobility of the legs are gradually destroyed. The cause is the deterioration of the spinal cord itself.

Dogs with myelopathy do not experience pain, but the disease directly affects mobility. The legs lose strength and the animal is not able to walk normally or to remain standing for long. Currently there is no cure for this disease, but physical therapy and holistic medicine can alleviate the symptoms.

 Diabetes

Females are more prone to diabetes, which can also cause walking problems. Although some breeds such as Golden, German Shepherds or Schnauzers are more prone, it can affect anyone.

To avoid diabetes, it is advisable not to give dogs foods rich in sugars. Since they are capable of eating anything, it is very common for many owners to share their food. But do not forget that some seemingly harmless foods that they also like are toxic to them. To determine if diabetes is the cause of walking problems, an analysis is enough.

 Arthritis

Arthritis and osteoarthritis are other reasons why dogs can have trouble walking. Adult and large breed dogs are usually the ones who suffer the most from this disease. It usually affects the hip and knee joints, impairing shock absorption and causing pain.

Some medications in addition to physical therapy can relieve symptoms. Thus, our friend will be able to maintain an optimal quality of life and reduce his walking problems.
The causes of walking problems are wide and varied. In any case, if we observe that our dog spends more than two days without being able to move normally, it is best to go to the vet. The sooner we detect the problem, the sooner we can fix it.

Do you know what is the sixth sense of your dog?

The smell: We know that the dog has an olfactory capacity far superior to the human, almost 260 times more and that there are also specific breeds more developed with this sense than others.

The dog from birth uses his nose to find his mother's nipple and to breastfeed. Because they are born blind and deaf, their sense helps them stay close.

How does your smell work? Everything around them contains a smell for them that unlike us sometimes we smell nothing, but just like you, they also keep information about odors. They have discovered cases of dogs that remember the smell of its first owner and after years without seeing it continue to recognize it, also pets that have escaped and returned to their old home traveling kilometers and kilometers, all thanks to their smell.

The explanation of their meaning is that when they feel odors they immediately go to the nasal membranes that cover the bones. These bones are in a twisted way to ensure that inside it is even the smallest smell. Its cells that cover along the membrane of your nose are close together, so they turn the smell into a chemical message that goes directly to your brain to remain in memory.

THE EAR: The puppy is barely born, this sense remains inactive until the tenth day.

Your ear is divided into 3 parts: external ear that serves to receive sound waves (conical cartilage) and the middle and internal.
Each time the dog hears a sound, it is carried inside, passing through the middle nest and reaching the inside that is inside the skull, where it vibrates against the eardrum.
Many studies have already proven that the dog's ear is 16 times more powerful than that of the human being. Example: A pencil that falls to the ground, can be detected by a dog, at a distance greater than 20 meters, while the man would listen to this only 5 meters.

THE VIEW: The puppy at birth has its eyes closed, it opens its eyelids about 10 days. On this date it does not mean that you see, but it gradually captures the vision. As in the sense of smell, there are also races that COME more than others.

Dogs have the possibility of capturing rapid movements that for the human go unnoticed. This happens because their eyes are flatter and more sensitive to movement.

On the other hand the reflective membrane increases the vision of the retina when the light goes down, so they can see at night. But its difficulty is to have little near vision (about 5-6 meters) because of the large lens that avoids adjusting the focal length. Your best vision is when you see something that passes 6 meters away since there is no focal accommodation.

Can you see colors?
Yes, this statement is supported by studies that prove that the dog sees colors, but in softer tones than ours. The colors that best distinguish are the closest to blue and violet. The green and red tones see them gray, the yellows and oranges, they see them pale yellow.

THE TOUCH: Although this sense is the least developed, it does not mean that it is unimportant. For education and training, touching a dog in a bad way can cause many bad habits and behaviors. Everything varies according to our mood and at what time we caress it.

Now returning to his sense, the sensitivity he feels is different in each part of his body. The most sensitive nerve endings of a dog are: The face, lips, nose, legs, testicles, thighs and neck.

THE TASTE: Like us, the dog also has 5 kinds of flavors to differentiate: Sweet, sour, bitter, salty and metallic. But we all know that the dog does not eat but swallows its food, does not even taste it. In the only moments he uses his teeth is to tear pieces of meat and his molars to crush the bones.

Dogs when they eat do more because of the smell this transmits. What is delicious flavors for us, for the dog they will be mostly smells.

SIXTH SENSE: It is linked to extrasensory capacity. Although there are very few scientists investigating these anticipatory behaviors, there are cases in which this sixth sense is present when they know when we go out or get home, if there will be seismic activity, if there are unidentified spectra, howls before the siren of 12 sound, they know the intentions of other people who are rather guided by smell but equally important. It is also known that they have a capacity to perceive all the variations caused by movements inside the Earth: magnetic, electric, sound, visual and olfactory.

The dog is one of the most wonderful and intelligent animals, capable of performing great feats and has the power to connect directly and internally with us.

                          -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In dogs, the most outstanding feature is the third sense: that of being able to distinguish different smells. An investigation revealed that, unlike humans, these animals have 300 million olfactory receptors.

Dogs have a highly developed olfactory system that allows them to distinguish unimaginable odors for humans. But there are many unknowns: what attracts them so much from a particular smell? Why do they spend a long time smelling another dog? How much can they smell that humans can't?

In this context, an investigation carried out by the Canine Cognition Laboratory at Barnard College, New York, explained how to understand that world of odors a little more and how humans could "train their smell."

"There are many ways to sniff, and the human method is not the best," he said. Thus, the researchers discovered that humans have about six million olfactory receptors, while dogs have 300 million. People inhale once per second and a half; while the canines five to ten times per second.

Each nostril of the dog is independent of the other. When exhaling the air comes out quickly so that new smells enter. In this way, dogs are so sensitive that some believe they can recognize diseases or even moods with the sense of smell.

And why do they sometimes lick nasty things? One theory, according to the expert, is that her sense of smell is really a complex motor system that is related to the brain and "there is no 'harmful smell' receptor in the dog's brain," he added. "However, they feel particularly interested in licking all kinds of things that are disgusting to humans."

Another great curiosity is when they smell for a long time the tail of another dog. "Much of a dog's identification is found in the anal glands. Those sacs convey how a dog feels - if he is anxious, playful - and the essence of who he is."

To greet others, "dogs move their tails basically to spread their personal smells." That is why the specialist suggested that it is healthy to take pets for a walk and let them smell the world so that "a dog is a dog" and catches up with humanity.
